When a man discovers through his telescope that a huge meteor is hurdling toward Earth, he must devise a plan to send a rocket up to destroy it before it can end all life on Earth. The man's son also is sent up into space, but, ejected along with the rest of the crew in a space lifeboat before impact.
David R. Ellis officially announced on January 5, 2011 that he was writing the script to a new movie, but, he would not be directing. Joss Whedon was officially picked on February 19 to be the director, and, casting began on March 8. Casting took several months, because Joss Whedon could not select the right cast members for each role. Josh Hutcherson's role was the last one to be cast, on September 15. After casting, several changes were made to the script, and a final draft was unveiled on November 5. Filming began on December 16, and officially ended on April 15, but, editing officially took six months, due to several designs for the meteor and the space ship. Bonus scenes started filming on September 29, and ended on November 6. After filming, editing was wrapped up, and, the film is still in post-production. The film will be released on June 26, 2013. Locations for filming included, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Washington D.C. Warner Bros Studios was used for the filming of the spaceship scenes.
